What are the most important survival skills?▼
In order: shelter (hypothermia kills fastest), water (3 days without), fire (warmth, purification, signaling), food (weeks without but morale matters), navigation (getting found or getting out).
What should be in a basic survival kit?▼
Knife, ferro rod, water filter, cordage (50ft paracord), tarp, first aid kit, compass, headlamp, metal container (for boiling water), whistle. Total: $100-200, under 5 lbs.
How do I start a fire without matches?▼
Ferro rod (easiest, $8-15), bow drill (primitive, requires practice), flint & steel (traditional, needs char cloth), solar lens (magnifying glass in sunlight). Learn ferro rod first, then bow drill.
What plants can I eat in the wild?▼
Safe universals in North America: dandelion (whole plant), cattail (roots, shoots, pollen), pine (needles for tea, inner bark), acorns (leach tannins), clover, plantain weed. Never eat anything you can't positively identify.
How much water do I need to survive?▼
Minimum 1 liter/day in cool conditions. 2-4 liters/day in heat or with exertion. Signs of dehydration: dark urine, headache, dizziness. Purify all wild water: boil 1 minute, filter, or chemically treat.
